Adopting a comprehensive perspective on weight loss fosters enduring achievements. When you prioritize and cherish your body, your transformations are more likely to stand the test of time.

Dear Friends,

Dana Skaf, a once-entrenched dieter, undertook a holistic journey that led to a permanent transformation in both her life and her weight. Now, as a weight loss and lifestyle coach, she is dedicated to imparting the wisdom she gained to help others achieve the same level of success. In her BodyWisdom™ Breakthru groups, Dana doesn't offer just another diet; instead, she presents a complete lifestyle overhaul. Let's delve deeper into Dana's insights!

Q: Could you please elaborate on how your weight loss groups offer a holistic and distinctive approach compared to other programs?

Dana: We adopt a holistic perspective by centering on the interconnectedness of the body and mind in the weight loss process. It transcends the boundaries of a mere diet, workout regimen, or lifestyle guide; it is a comprehensive program designed to recognize you as an individual and assess how various aspects of your life contribute to weight management.

What sets this apart from others is its adaptability. The dietary plan isn't rigid; it's tailored to align with your unique lifestyle, schedule, and culinary preferences. Likewise, the workout plan isn't one-size-fits-all; it's brimming with suggestions and adaptations to truly personalize workouts according to your lifestyle and body requirements. Moreover, our focus on mindset shifts fosters positive self-talk, enhanced self-esteem, and an overarching sense of self-love. This foundation of self-care empowers you to sustain the changes you make.

In essence, embracing a holistic perspective on weight loss is the key to achieving enduring success. When you genuinely care for and value your body, your transformation becomes more likely to stand the test of time.

Q: Among the pillars of health you teach, could you highlight one of them for us?

Dana: Certainly, one often underestimated pillar of health is the emotional pillar. While understanding your goal (which I refer to as the spiritual pillar), paying attention to your food choices (the nutritional pillar), and implementing a workout plan (the physical pillar) are all crucial components. The emotional pillar, however, is the missing link in many other weight-loss programs. It delves into how your emotions influence your behaviors and addresses issues such as emotional eating, lack of motivation, the all-or-nothing mindset, and more.

For instance, perhaps you've developed the habit of ordering pizza after a long day or relying on a nightly glass or two of wine, even though it disrupts your sleep and leaves you groggy in the morning. You might turn to wine as a way to relax, viewing it as your only means of unwinding. Or maybe you reward yourself with cupcakes or ice cream when you accomplish something noteworthy. Regardless of the specific reasons, the emotional pillar plays a significant role in either supporting or hindering your weight-loss objectives. Therefore, it's essential to address all emotions in the context of cultivating healthy habits.

Q: Shame and negative self-talk are common challenges faced by individuals striving for weight loss and improved health. How do you assist your students in overcoming these particular concerns?

Dana: Negative self-talk is a formidable obstacle that often derails individuals from attaining their goals. I can personally relate to this struggle, as I used to berate myself for consuming too many calories or missing a workout. And where did that self-criticism lead me? Right back into my negative, unhealthy routines, taking me farther away from my weight-loss objectives. I once found myself 25 pounds overweight and profoundly unhappy. It wasn't until I transformed my self-talk that I truly began to transform my life.

Treating yourself with the same kindness, encouragement, and enthusiasm you would offer your best friend or biggest supporter can yield a profound shift in your habits. Establishing healthy routines and maintaining consistency in healthy behaviors are the keys to accelerating your progress toward weight-loss goals. Rather than branding yourself as a failure or chastising yourself for the occasional unhealthy choice, allow yourself grace, discover liberation, and resolve to make the next choice a healthier one.

Q: Could you please describe the practices and assignments included in these groups?

Dana: Certainly, these groups encompass a variety of elements to support your weight-loss journey. They provide workout routines, dietary tips, and a structured food plan. Additionally, there are confidence-boosting exercises aimed at enhancing self-esteem and fostering positive self-talk. You'll find a combination of video tutorials and written instructions, complemented by reflection questions and personal anecdotes, all designed to assist and empower you on your path to weight loss.

Emphasizing the confidence-building aspects of these groups is just as essential as addressing nutrition and exercise. I place great importance on offering a comprehensive program that incorporates diverse mental and physical exercises because this approach not only yields rapid results but also ensures lasting transformations that will benefit you for a lifetime.

Q: Shedding pounds is a challenge, but maintaining that weight loss can be an even greater hurdle. Do these groups provide support for students to sustain their weight loss?

Dana: Absolutely, these groups are firmly centered on helping students sustain their weight loss once they've reached their goals. They don't offer a quick fix or a rapid weight loss scheme. Instead, it's crafted to instill enduring, healthy habits both mentally and physically, resulting in lasting outcomes. By delving into the emotional pillar and understanding your emotional triggers and negative self-talk, you acquire insights about yourself that are difficult to forget, making it challenging to revert to old habits.

From my experience, individuals who commit to gaining a deeper understanding of themselves and fostering a healthier self-relationship are the ones who achieve long-term success. This is why I incorporate an emotional component alongside dietary and exercise guidance. It enables individuals to gain self-awareness, identify potential pitfalls, recognize negative habits, and address self-criticism. With this knowledge, you can intercept yourself and make positive adjustments before veering off course.

Q: Thank you, Dana! These groups inspire you to establish a strong foundation for achieving the transformations you desire in your life, whether it's in terms of weight loss or enhancing your self-esteem. Until we meet again, take good care.
